Susan K. Barnes, LCPC, LMFT, Art Therapist
I'm a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor, Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, and Art Therapist. I work with children, adolescents and adults as individuals as well as with families and couples.  I have a general practice with specializations in depression and anxiety, trauma, women s issues, grief and loss, life adjustments and marriage counseling. For children I work with the above mentioned problems as well as AD/HD, family adjustments including divorce and remarriage, self esteem and social skills.

In addition to traditional talk therapy I specialize in the use of art therapy as a therapeutic tool for children (and receptive adolescents and adults).  Art therapy uses the creative process of art making to improve and enhance the physical, mental and emotional well-being of individuals. The creative process involved in artistic self-expression helps people to resolve conflicts, develop interpersonal skills, reduce stress, increase self-esteem, and achieve insight. Art therapy has also proved to be effective for trauma resolution as it addresses the non-verbal, somatic memory and allows for an integration of the cognitive, emotional and physiological levels of trauma.

My approach to treatment is client-centered and based on a variety of techniques and psychological theories that are tailored to meet each individual s unique needs.  I believe in a holistic approach to healing that recognizes that the emotional, mental, spiritual and physical elements of each person comprise a system, and I attempt to treat the whole person in this context.
